Gemini 4 Carbon Explained: Access, Price and Uses

By Botvana Team ·

Google has a new top model, but you probably can't use it yet. On 28 October 2026, Google DeepMind announced Gemini 4 Carbon, which it calls its "strongest model with state-of-the-art cybersecurity and long horizon capabilities". Short answer: Carbon is aimed first at security teams and developers working on long, hard engineering jobs. Access is starting with a small group of cyber defenders, and a public release is promised "as soon as possible".

This guide covers what Carbon is, what Google claims it can do, what it will cost, and what it means for students, freelancers and small businesses. Every number comes from Google's own announcement, so read the benchmark scores as company claims, not independent tests.

QUICK ANSWER

Gemini 4 Carbon is Google DeepMind's new top model, announced on 28 October 2026 and aimed first at security teams and developers working on long, hard engineering jobs. Access starts with a small group of cyber defenders, and Google promises a public release as soon as possible. Benchmark numbers are Google's own claims.

What is Gemini 4 Carbon?

Gemini 4 Carbon is Google's newest frontier model. It builds on Gemini 4 Argon, which Google launched about two weeks earlier. Google describes Carbon as built for "sustained agentic workflows": tasks where the AI works step by step for a long time instead of answering one question. Google says its own teams have seen Carbon "run for days" on complex jobs like finding the root cause of subtle bugs across large codebases.

The headline claim is that Carbon ranks #1 on version 5.0 of the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, with a score of 59. That is a widely watched third-party leaderboard, but the score is quoted from Google's post. Rankings change quickly. Just two days later, a separate leaderboard (Epoch AI's Capabilities Index) put OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra in first place, as we noted in our GPT-6 guide.

Why Carbon is all about cybersecurity

Most model launches lead with chat or coding. Carbon leads with cyber defense. Google reports these results, measured without guardrails:

  • Finding vulnerabilities: 88.2% on SEC-bench Pro, a test of finding real flaws in real software.
  • Checking whether a flaw can be exploited: 54.8% on ExploitGym, which helps defenders decide which bugs to fix first.
  • Fixing the root cause: 71.0% on Collinear's CWE-bench, turning findings into working code patches.

Google also says Carbon more than doubles Argon's success rate at writing secure code on internal tests. It adds that the Chrome team found Carbon "more than 10X better than another lab's large frontier model" at writing high-quality patches. That is an internal comparison against an unnamed rival, so treat it as marketing until outside testers confirm it.

This matters beyond big companies. In our AI agent attacks checklist we covered how attackers already use AI agents to hit many targets at once. Models like Carbon are the defenders' answer: they help find and patch holes before attackers do.

Who can use Gemini 4 Carbon right now?

Almost no one yet. Google calls the rollout "deliberate":

  1. Starting the week of 28 October, Carbon goes to a subset of cyber defenders.
  2. Access then expands gradually to "additional trusted partners" through Google's Fairwind Program.
  3. Google says it is taking part in the U.S. government's voluntary pre-release model testing process.
  4. Developers, businesses and consumers get access later, through Google's products, "as soon as possible". There is no date yet.

If you open the Gemini app today, you are not using Carbon. Ignore any website or app that claims to offer "Gemini 4 Carbon free" right now. It is likely a scam or a renamed older model.

Gemini 4 Carbon price for developers

Google published API pricing ahead of the wider launch:

  • Introductory price (same as Argon): $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. Cached input is 95% off the input price.
  • After the introductory period: $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens.

For comparison, Anthropic's small Claude Haiku 5.5 costs $0.10 / $0.50 per million tokens for shorter prompts. Carbon is a premium model for hard jobs, not a cheap everyday chatbot. Our ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Claude comparison covers which assistant fits which kind of work.

Safety: what Google says changed

Carbon uses the same safety stack as Argon: training, real-time misuse defenses, prompt-injection resistance and chain-of-thought monitoring. Google lists several improvements:

  • Less cheating on tests: successful cheating on Terminal-Bench 4.0 fell to 0.0%, and cheating attempts dropped to 0.4%.
  • Fewer made-up claims: about half as many unsupported claims as Argon in internal testing.
  • Better behavior as an agent: overreach down 26% and "under-service" down 29%. High-severity misalignment alerts in live coding fell by almost 80%.
  • Prompt injection: a 0.0% attack success rate on Gray Swan's Indirect Prompt Injection benchmark, down from Argon's 0.7%.

Prompt injection is the trick where hidden text on a web page or in a file tries to take over an AI agent. A 0% score on one benchmark is good news. It doesn't mean the problem is solved, though, so you should still check what any AI agent does with your accounts.

What Gemini 4 Carbon means for you

Students

Not much changes yet, since Carbon isn't in the Gemini app. Keep using what you have, such as Gemini Notebook for studying and file editing in Gemini chat. If you study computer science or security, follow Carbon's benchmarks: AI that finds and fixes vulnerabilities is becoming a core skill area.

Freelance developers

Once API access opens, Carbon could suit long debugging sessions and security reviews of client code. Budget carefully, because long agent runs use a lot of tokens. Compare it with coding agents you already use, like GitHub Copilot Fusion.

Small businesses

You won't buy Carbon directly. You may benefit through security tools built on it. Google mentions Wiz, its cloud security platform, which reports Carbon leading its web penetration-testing benchmarks. Until then, the basics in our security checklist still protect you most.

Gemini 4 Carbon vs GPT-6 Astra vs Claude Opus 5.5

It's too early for a fair head-to-head, because Carbon isn't publicly available. Here is what we can say from public sources as of 31 October 2026:

  • Gemini 4 Carbon: #1 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v5.0 (59), per Google. Limited access.
  • GPT-6 Astra: #1 on Epoch AI's Capabilities Index (169) as of 30 October. Available behind ChatGPT's Pro reasoning option.
  • Claude Opus 5.5: passed by Astra on Epoch's index. Anthropic still recommends it, with Sonnet 5.5, for complex agentic coding.

Different leaderboards measure different things. Pick a model by testing it on your own tasks, not by who is "#1" this week.

Frequently asked questions

When will Gemini 4 Carbon be available to everyone?

Google hasn't given a date. It says Carbon will come to developers, businesses and consumers "as soon as possible", after testing with cyber defenders and Fairwind partners.

Is Gemini 4 Carbon free?

Not yet available to the public. For developers, the introductory API price is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, rising to $4 and $20 later.

Is Gemini 4 Carbon better than GPT-6?

On Artificial Analysis's index, Google says yes. On Epoch AI's index, GPT-6 Astra leads. Neither result is the final word. Test both on your own work once Carbon opens up.

What is the difference between Gemini 4 Argon and Carbon?

Argon launched about two weeks earlier and is Google's current available model. Carbon builds on it with stronger coding, long-task and cybersecurity skills and better alignment scores.

The bottom line

Gemini 4 Carbon shows where frontier AI is going: agents that work for hours or days, and a heavy focus on security. For most readers it's news to watch, not a tool to use yet. We'll update this guide when Google opens wider access. Bookmark Botvana for plain-English updates.
