Typing Speed Test

How fast do you really type? This free typing speed test measures your words per minute (WPM) and accuracy using the same standard most typing tests and many employers use: one "word" equals five characters, including spaces. Pick a 1, 2 or 5 minute test, click the box and start typing the passage shown. The timer starts on your first keystroke, each character turns green or red as you go, and your gross speed, net speed (adjusted for uncorrected errors) and accuracy appear the moment time runs out or you finish the text. Passages are everyday English sentences rather than random word lists, so the result reflects real-world typing such as emails and documents. For context, many adults type somewhere around 35 to 45 WPM, while data-entry and transcription jobs often ask for 60 WPM or more with high accuracy, so it's a useful check before applying for admin, virtual assistant or customer support roles. Take the test a few times and look at your average rather than a single run. Your results stay on your device, and your best score is remembered only in this browser so you can track progress.

How the typing test works

  1. Choose a duration and click in the typing box.
  2. Type the passage exactly, including capitals and punctuation. Correct mistakes with Backspace if you like.
  3. When time runs out or you finish, your speed and accuracy are shown.

How WPM is calculated

Gross WPM = (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. Net WPM = gross WPM − (uncorrected errors ÷ minutes). Accuracy = correct characters ÷ characters typed.

FAQ

What is a good typing speed?

Around 40 WPM is a common average. 60+ WPM is considered fast and is often required for data entry or transcription roles. Accuracy above 95% matters as much as speed.

Why is my net WPM lower than gross?

Net WPM subtracts uncorrected errors, so it rewards accurate typing.

Does it work on phones?

Yes, but phone keyboards are slower and autocorrect can interfere, so results aren’t comparable to a physical keyboard.

Is my score saved?

Only your best score, in this browser’s local storage. Nothing is sent anywhere.
