Canva Brush: How to Edit Designs With AI Prompts

By Botvana Team ·

If you've ever asked an AI tool to change one headline and watched it redesign the whole slide, you'll understand why Canva Brush got attention this week. Canva calls Brush a vision-language model for design: it looks at a design you already have, works out how it's put together, and changes only what you ask for, from a single line of copy to every page of a deck.

This guide explains what Canva Brush is, who can use it today, how to switch it on inside Canva AI, the best prompts to start with, and how it fits alongside Canva Craft, the image model Canva launched a week earlier. Everything here comes from Canva's own announcements, checked on November 1, 2026. We flag clearly where a number is Canva's claim rather than an independent test.

QUICK ANSWER

Canva Brush is Canva's own AI model for editing existing designs with plain-English prompts. It launched on October 29, 2026 for Canva Pro subscribers inside Canva AI, with wider availability "coming soon". Open a design, open Canva AI, choose "Brush" from the model dropdown, and describe the change. Everything it produces stays fully editable.

What is Canva Brush?

Canva Brush is a vision-language model built by Canva Research, the company's in-house AI lab, which Canva says has 160 people. A vision-language model can read images as well as text, which is what lets Brush "see" your layout before it edits it.

According to Canva's launch post, Brush works in an agentic loop: it writes and runs code to adjust design elements, then inspects the page to decide its next step. In plain terms, it edits, checks its own work, and keeps going until the design matches your request, rather than generating a flat picture from scratch.

The key promise is control. Canva says everything Brush creates stays fully editable, just like any other Canva design: text, images, colours and layout remain normal Canva elements you can move or change by hand.

Who can use Canva Brush right now?

At launch, Brush powers "supported design edits" in Canva AI for people on Canva Pro plans. Canva says expanded availability is "coming soon" but hasn't given a date. If you're on the free plan, you won't see it yet.

Brush is a feature inside Canva, not a separate app. Canva's launch materials don't mention an API for Brush, so developers can't call it directly the way they can call Canva Craft (more on that below).

How to use Canva Brush step by step

  1. Open a design. Start with an existing design in the Canva editor, or attach or link a design inside Canva AI.
  2. Open Canva AI and find the model dropdown.
  3. Select "Brush". Canva says this is how you make sure Brush powers your full editing session.
  4. Describe one clear change. For example: "Change every slide title to navy and make them sentence case."
  5. Check the result, then refine. Keep giving directions in Canva AI, or switch to the editor and finish by hand whenever you like.

A practical tip from experience with any AI editor: one change per prompt is easier to check than five. If a request touches many pages, scroll through every page afterwards before you share or export.

Best Canva Brush prompts to try first

Canva highlights three jobs Brush is good at. Here are prompts in the same spirit that you can adapt:

1. Restyle a design or image

Canva's examples include changing the colour scheme, changing the weather in an image, or describing a different vibe. Try: "Restyle this poster in a warm autumn palette, keep the layout and text exactly the same."

2. Make one change across a multi-page design

Instead of editing headers slide by slide, ask once: "On every page, replace 'Q3' with 'Q4' and move the logo to the top-right corner."

3. Remix a design for another channel

Canva's own example is turning a presentation slide into an Instagram graphic. Try: "Turn slide 4 into a square Instagram post, keep the headline and chart." Before posting, double-check the target dimensions with our guide to social media image sizes for 2026.

Canva Brush vs Canva Craft: what's the difference?

Canva launched two in-house models a week apart, and they do different jobs. Canva's own one-line summary: "Craft generates the image, and Brush refines the design around it."

According to Canva's Craft announcement, Craft plans the composition first (which elements appear, where, at what scale, and any text) and then renders the image. That two-stage approach is meant to give cleaner layouts and more legible text than models that jump straight to pixels.

How fast and good is Canva Brush? Canva's claims

Canva says that at launch Brush is up to 69% faster for general design editing tasks and has a 46% lower cost per edit task than its previous design agent. In its internal testing, Canva says Brush matched or beat the quality of that previous setup on most editing tasks, with particularly strong results for restyling designs and adapting them to new formats.

Keep two things in mind. These are Canva's own internal comparisons against its own older system, not independent benchmarks. And "lower cost" is Canva's running cost per task; the launch post doesn't say it changes what you pay for Canva Pro.

On training, Canva says Brush started from "a leading open-weights model" (it doesn't name which) and was post-trained on real design and editing tasks, using design expertise plus anonymised insights from people who opted in to help improve Canva AI, followed by large-scale reinforcement learning scored against criteria set by Canva's professional designers.

Limits and what's coming next

Canva is upfront that this is version one. Its launch post says the team is already working on:

  • Brand Kit support, so edits can follow your saved brand colours and fonts.
  • Referencing attachments in your prompts.
  • Better handling of image-heavy layouts.

Until Brand Kit support arrives, brand-conscious teams should check colours and fonts after every Brush edit. As Fast Company noted, the big idea is avoiding the domino effect where one small AI edit changes parts of a design you never asked to touch. That's worth testing on your own files before you rely on it for client work.

Is Canva Brush worth it for creators?

If you already pay for Canva Pro, there's no reason not to try it: it's included, and the edits stay editable, so the risk is low. It looks most useful for repetitive work, such as updating a 30-slide deck, resizing one campaign into several formats, or testing a few colour directions quickly.
