Reddit AI Mode Traffic Drop: 6 Moves for Bloggers

By Botvana Team ·

"The reality is, AI Mode does not drive traffic. Not for us, and not to anybody, as far as I know." Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said that on the company's Q3 2026 earnings call on 29 October (The Verge). Reddit said its Google search referrals fell by more than 1 million per week on average in October. Its stock dropped 29% the next day, its biggest one-day fall (Reuters).

Short answer for bloggers: if one of the web's biggest sites is losing Google clicks to AI answers, small blogs need to stop relying on search alone. This post covers what Reddit said, what it means, and six practical moves to protect your traffic.

QUICK ANSWER

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said on the Q3 2026 earnings call that AI Mode does not drive traffic, and Reddit said its Google search referrals fell by more than 1 million per week on average in October. For bloggers, the lesson is simple: stop relying on Google search alone and build other traffic sources.

What Reddit actually said

From Reddit's earnings call and the coverage of it:

  • Search referral traffic was "down meaningfully in Q3", and the decline sped up late in the quarter (earnings call transcript).
  • In October, search referrals fell by more than 1 million a week on average.
  • If the trend continues, Reddit warned its daily active uniques could fall by a "low double-digit percentage" in Q4 from about 130 million.
  • U.S. daily actives fell 2% to 50.7 million, Reddit's first decline since going public in 2024 (Reuters).
  • Reddit is moving to a mostly logged-in experience, starting with tests outside the U.S. in Q4 (TechCrunch).

Huffman's explanation has two parts. First, AI Overviews and AI Mode have grown from "a feature" into "the full search experience", and at minimum they push everyone down the page. Second, Reddit believes its machine-translated content is being ranked lower outside the U.S. He also noted that Google is "crawling us as hard as ever". Demand for the content hasn't changed. Clicks have.

Business was still strong, to be fair: revenue grew 53% and passed $3 billion over the last 12 months. The worry is about who owns the audience in the future.

Why this matters for small blogs

Reddit has a famous brand. People add "reddit" to their searches. If Reddit loses clicks, a new blog with no brand is even more exposed. TechCrunch notes that most websites and publishers have already felt the shift to an AI-centered web, with fewer click-throughs as AI summaries answer the question on the results page.

There's a nuance here, though. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode have no special requirements, and it does show links in them. Our Google AI Mode guide for bloggers covers how to stay eligible. Being cited is still worth chasing. You just can't count on it as your only source of visitors.

Six traffic moves for bloggers in the AI Mode era: direct audience, original content, answer-first writing, social, measure in Search Console, diversify

6 moves to protect your blog traffic in the AI Mode era

1. Build a direct audience

Reddit's answer is to make itself "a direct destination". Do the same on a small scale: an email newsletter, a "bookmark us" note, and a reason to come back weekly, such as a regular AI news roundup. Readers who come directly don't depend on Google.

2. Publish things AI can't summarize away

AI answers are good at generic facts. They're weaker at first-hand experience: your own tests, screenshots, cost calculations and mistakes. Our build log of the Botvana theme is an example of content only we could write.

3. Write answer-first, then go deep

Start each post with a two- or three-sentence direct answer, then add the detail, steps and FAQ. That gives AI systems a clean passage to cite, and gives humans a reason to keep reading.

4. Use social platforms the honest way

Share each post on X, LinkedIn and Pinterest with a genuine summary, not spam. Answer real questions in communities when you have something useful to add, and follow each community's rules on links.

5. Measure what's really happening

Search Console now has a Generative AI performance report. Check it weekly next to normal search performance, so you know whether AI features are sending you impressions or clicks. Our Search Console indexing log shows the setup.

6. Diversify your search engines too

Add your site to Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap. Bing also powers other search and AI products. Short videos or a YouTube channel can bring in a separate audience. If you use AI to make video, check our YouTube AI disclosure guide.

Should you block Google's AI features?

Probably not. Hiding from AI answers usually means less visibility, not more clicks, and blocking crawlers carelessly can remove you from regular search. A related but separate question is whether to let AI companies train on your content. OpenAI just announced support for a shared robots.txt signal for that, which we explain in OpenAI's new robots.txt AI training signal.

What to watch next

  • Whether other large publishers report similar drops in their next earnings.
  • How Reddit's logged-in tests outside the U.S. affect its visibility in search.
  • Any change in how Google links to sources in AI Mode. Reports say Google is also still working out how to make money from AI Mode, which could change the layout again.

Frequently asked questions

Does Google AI Mode reduce website traffic?

Reddit's CEO says it does. Reddit reported more than 1 million fewer search referrals per week in October 2026, and many publishers report fewer click-throughs. Results vary by site and topic.

Why did Reddit stock fall?

Shares fell 29% on 30 October 2026 after Reddit warned that Google's AI search features were cutting referral traffic and could shrink its daily users in Q4.

Is Reddit going login-only?

Reddit plans a primarily logged-in experience, starting with tests in select markets outside the U.S. in Q4 2026. It has no full rollout date and says a logged-out front page still matters.

How can a small blog get traffic without Google?

Email newsletters, social sharing, Bing, community answers, YouTube and partnerships with other creators. Aim for several sources so no single platform controls your traffic.

The bottom line

Reddit's warning shows how far search has moved toward AI answers. Search still matters, so keep your posts indexable and citation-worthy. But build an audience you own, starting today.
