Grade point average (GPA) is how US high schools, colleges and many scholarship and graduate programs summarise your grades, and it's often asked for by Canadian and international admissions too. This free GPA calculator works it out on the standard 4.0 scale. Add each course, choose the letter grade (A+ to F) and enter the credit hours, and your semester GPA updates instantly, weighted by credits so a 4-credit course counts more than a 1-credit one. Want your overall figure? Enter your current cumulative GPA and the credits it's based on, and the calculator combines them into a new cumulative GPA. High school students can tick a box to mark Honors (+0.5) or AP/IB (+1.0) classes and see a weighted GPA alongside the unweighted one, since many US schools report both. The grade-point table we use (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3 and so on) is the most common one, but schools differ, especially on A+ (some give 4.0, some 4.3) and on how they weight advanced classes, so check your school's policy for official figures. UK, Australian and German grading systems work differently and don't map neatly onto GPA. Your courses are saved only in this browser.
Calculate your GPA
Weighted GPA adds +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP/IB (common US practice, capped at 5.0). Check your school’s rules.
How to calculate GPA
- Add each course with its letter grade and credit hours.
- Mark Honors or AP/IB courses if you want a weighted GPA.
- For cumulative GPA, enter your current GPA and total credits.
Grade points (4.0 scale)
| A+ / A | 4.0 (A+ 4.3 at some schools) |
| A− | 3.7 |
| B+ / B / B− | 3.3 / 3.0 / 2.7 |
| C+ / C / C− | 2.3 / 2.0 / 1.7 |
| D+ / D / D− | 1.3 / 1.0 / 0.7 |
| F | 0.0 |
GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits.
FAQ
What’s the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA uses the 4.0 scale for every class. Weighted GPA adds extra points for harder classes such as Honors and AP, so it can exceed 4.0.
How is cumulative GPA calculated?
It’s the credit-weighted average of all your courses: (old GPA × old credits + semester points) ÷ (old credits + new credits).
Do pass/fail classes count?
Usually not. Leave them out unless your school counts them.
Can I convert UK or German grades to GPA?
There’s no single official conversion; universities and services like WES use their own methods. Use their guidance for applications.
