"What do I need on the final to get a B?" is one of the most-searched questions at the end of every term, and this free grade calculator answers it in seconds. In the first part, list your assessments, such as homework, quizzes, a midterm and projects, with the score you got and the weight each one carries in the syllabus. The calculator works out your current weighted average from the work completed so far, so missing items don't drag it down, and shows how much of the course weight is still to come. In the second part, enter the weight of your final exam and the overall grade you want, and it tells you the exact score you need on the final. It also tells you plainly if the target is already guaranteed or no longer possible, so you can plan your revision time realistically. Scores can be entered as percentages, which works whether your school uses US letter grades, UK percentage marks or another percentage-based system, and the weights don't have to add up to 100 yet. A quick reference table converts percentages to common US letter grades, but always check your own syllabus, because cut-offs vary between schools and instructors. Your list is saved only in this browser.
1. Current grade
2. Final exam grade needed
Assumes your current average represents the non-final part of the course. Check your syllabus for rounding and cut-offs.
How to use the grade calculator
- Add each graded item with your score (%) and its weight (%).
- Read your current weighted average.
- Enter the final exam weight and the grade you want to see the score you need.
The formulas
Weighted average = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ weight. Final needed = (target − current × (1 − f)) ÷ f, where f is the final's weight as a fraction.
Common US letter grades
| A | 90–100% |
| B | 80–89% |
| C | 70–79% |

FAQ
Do my weights need to add up to 100?
No. The current average uses only the work you’ve entered, so you can calculate mid-term.
What if it says I need more than 100%?
Then the target isn’t reachable with the final alone, unless there’s extra credit. Try a lower target to see what’s realistic.
How do I enter points instead of percentages?
Convert each score: points earned ÷ points possible × 100. Our percentage calculator can help.
