Mic Test

About to join a Zoom, Teams or Google Meet call, record a podcast, or talk to an AI voice assistant, and not sure anyone will hear you? This free mic test checks your microphone in a few seconds. Press Start, allow microphone access when your browser asks, and speak: a live level meter and waveform show whether sound is coming through and how loud it is. If you have several microphones, such as a laptop mic, a USB mic and a headset, choose the one you want from the list to find out which is actually working. You can also record a 5-second clip and play it back to hear exactly how you sound, including background noise, echo or a muffled signal. The page tells you the input's name and the sample rate your browser reports, which helps when troubleshooting. Privacy matters with microphones, so to be clear: audio is processed only inside your browser using the Web Audio API and MediaRecorder; nothing is recorded to a server, and the clip disappears when you leave the page. Press Stop at any time to release the mic, and your browser's address bar will show when it's in use. Below you'll find fixes for the most common problems on Windows, Mac, phones and Chromebooks.

Test your microphone

Press Start and allow microphone access.

How to test your mic

  1. Press Start mic test and choose Allow.
  2. Speak normally. The bar should move into the middle of the range.
  3. Pick a different microphone from the list if nothing moves.
  4. Record 5 seconds and play it back to hear yourself.

Mic not working? Quick fixes

  • Browser blocked it: click the camera/mic icon in the address bar and allow the microphone, then reload.
  • Windows: Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone → allow desktop apps and your browser.
  • Mac: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → enable your browser.
  • Muted hardware: check headset mute switches and that no other app (like Zoom) is holding the mic.

FAQ

Is my voice recorded or uploaded?

No. Audio stays in your browser. The optional 5-second clip lives only in this page’s memory and is gone when you leave.

Why is the level bar not moving?

The wrong input may be selected, the mic may be muted, or the operating system may be blocking the browser. Try another device in the list and check the fixes above.

What level is ideal?

Normal speech should sit around the middle. If it hits the red end constantly, lower the input gain in your system sound settings.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, in Safari and Chrome. The site must be opened over HTTPS, which Botvana uses.
