Keyboard Tester

A sticky spacebar, a key that only works sometimes, or a new mechanical keyboard you want to check before the return window closes: a keyboard tester answers the question in a minute. Press any key and it lights up on the full keyboard map below. Keys you've tested stay highlighted, so it's easy to see which ones have never registered. The key you're holding right now glows in a different colour, which makes a stuck key obvious. The panel shows the last key's name, its event.key and event.code values (handy for developers and remapping), and whether it fired from auto-repeat. It also counts how many keys are pressed together, so you can test ghosting and rollover: hold down several keys at once and see whether all of them register. Many office keyboards top out at 2 to 6 keys, while gaming boards often handle 10 or more. The layout is a standard US ANSI keyboard. Keys from other layouts, media keys and the numeric keypad still appear in the log even if they're not on the map. Some system shortcuts, like the Windows key, Cmd+Tab or Fn, are caught by your operating system first, so they may not show up. Nothing you type is stored or sent.

Click the keyboard area first so it receives your key presses.

How to test your keyboard

  1. Click the keyboard area.
  2. Press every key once. Tested keys turn cyan.
  3. Any key left dark didn't register.
  4. Hold several keys together to check rollover.

If a key isn't working

  • Try another USB port, or re-pair or recharge a wireless keyboard.
  • Clean under the keycap with compressed air.
  • Test on another computer to rule out software or layout settings.

FAQ

What is keyboard ghosting?

When you press several keys together, some cheaper keyboards fail to register all of them. The “max held” counter shows your keyboard’s limit.

Why doesn’t the Windows, Cmd or Fn key show?

Your operating system or the keyboard itself handles them before the browser sees the press.

Does it work with non-US layouts?

Yes. Keys are matched by their physical position (event.code), so they light up in the equivalent spot.

Is what I type recorded?

No. Nothing is stored or sent anywhere.
