Personal AI Assistant Compared (2026): Which to Pick?

By Botvana Team ·

A personal AI assistant used to mean setting timers with your voice. In 2026 it means something much bigger: an AI that remembers your preferences, drafts your emails, plans trips, reads documents and, increasingly, takes actions on your behalf.

We compared the five assistants most people in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and Germany are choosing between: ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Claude, Meta Muse and Grok. Prices come from each company's own pricing page (checked October 31 and November 1, 2026). We focus on what each one documents and who it suits, not on benchmark scores.

ChatGPT is the best all-rounder, Gemini is best if you live in Google apps, Claude is strongest for long writing and documents, Meta Muse is a free agent that does tasks for you (US and Singapore so far), and Grok suits people who want real-time X content. ChatGPT: the all-rounder

ChatGPT's free plan now includes unlimited everyday text chats with GPT-6, with limits on uploads, image creation, voice and deep research. Plus ($20/month) adds advanced reasoning, projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs. It's the safest default if you want one assistant for everything: writing, planning, studying, coding help and voice conversations.

Google Gemini: best inside Google's world

If your life runs on Gmail, Google Calendar, Docs and an Android phone, Gemini fits in most naturally. Google offers a free tier, Google AI Plus at $4.99/month with 2x higher usage, and Google AI Pro at $19.99/month with 4x higher usage than free. Students should look at our Gemini Student Hub guide.

Claude: best for writing and documents

Claude has a reputation for clear, natural writing and careful handling of long documents. The Pro plan costs $20 a month, or $17 a month with an annual subscription, and higher Max ($100) and Ultra ($200) tiers suit heavy daily use. Claude also works inside Chrome and Microsoft 365 on paid plans.

Meta Muse: an assistant that does the work

Muse is different from the others: it's an agent with its own secure cloud computer, so it can book, shop, send email and follow up on tasks, asking your permission before sensitive actions. Meta's FAQ says it's free with a usage limit; Reuters reported paid tiers of $20 and $100 a month. The catch for our readers: it launched in the US and Singapore, with no announced date for the UK, Canada, Australia or Germany as of late October 2026. Our ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Claude comparison goes deeper on the three big chat assistants.

Grok: real-time and built into X

Grok, from xAI, is tightly linked to X (formerly Twitter), which makes it handy for following breaking news and trends. It has a free tier, with Grok Premium at $30 a month and higher tiers for heavy users.

How to choose your personal AI assistant

  • One assistant for everything: ChatGPT.
  • You live in Gmail and Android: Gemini.
  • You write a lot or work with long PDFs: Claude.
  • You want it to actually do tasks, and you're in the US: Meta Muse.
  • You follow news and trends on X: Grok.

Privacy questions to ask

  • Does it train on my chats, and can I opt out?
  • What does it remember, and can I delete memories?
  • Which apps and accounts can it access, and does it ask before acting?

Never share passwords or bank details with any assistant. Agents that act on your behalf need extra care; our guide to AI agent risks explains why.

What a personal AI assistant can do for you today

  • Email and messages: draft replies, shorten long threads and adjust tone for a manager or a client.
  • Planning: build a weekly meal plan, a workout schedule or a three-day itinerary for a city break.
  • Learning: explain a topic at your level, quiz you, or summarise a long report.
  • Money and paperwork: help compare phone contracts, explain a bill or draft a complaint letter. Check numbers yourself.
  • Tasks: with agent features, book a table, track a parcel or fill in a form, usually with your approval at each sensitive step.

The more context you give, such as your location, preferences and deadlines, the more useful the answers. Most assistants let you save these as custom instructions or memory so you don't repeat yourself.

Privacy basics before you share personal details

Read each assistant's data settings before you paste in medical, financial or work information. Most let you turn off chat history or opt out of model training, and business plans usually exclude your data from training by default. If you would not email it to a stranger, think twice before typing it in.

Can you use more than one?

Yes, and many people do: a free tier of one assistant alongside a paid plan of another. Just watch the total cost, which is where the next section helps.

Step by step: work out what your assistants really cost

Use the free AI Subscription Cost Calculator to see your real yearly spend before upgrading:

  1. Open the calculator and tick every AI plan you pay for or are considering: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok or Perplexity.
  2. Set the number of months to 12 to see the yearly cost.
  3. Switch the currency to pounds or euros if you're in the UK or Europe (the conversion is an estimate).
  4. Look for overlap. If two plans do the same job, drop one.
  5. Re-check prices on each company's own page before paying; the calculator links to its sources.
